| Description | : The Bachelor of Arts degree in Liberal Studies at the University of Illinois at Springfield is built on 25 years of experience in assisting students to design individualized degree programs. The Liberal Studies Online program enables students to complete coursework using the latest networked information technology for increased access to educational resources and materials, and offers individualized instruction, advising, and support. Students develop customized educational programs that include 10 semester hours of Liberal Studies core courses, 12 semester hours of university requirements, and 38 semester hours of electives structured around their academic interests. Faculty advisors provide students with program orientation and ongoing academic advising, and answer questions about program policies and procedures. During the introductory course, LIS 301: Self-Directed Learning, students prepare degree program proposals that assess their current learning needs and long-range academic and professional/personal goals, and integrate them with appropriate learning methods, such as Internet-based courses, telecourses, campus-based classroom courses, and credit for prior learning assessment. Although the degree proposal must be broad enough to meet the interdisciplinary goals of the Liberal Studies Online program, students may integrate a thematic focus into their curricula. For example, learners may choose such emphases as international studies, women's studies, African-American studies, human resource development, or labor studies. | |||
