Philosophy Minor Philosophy C University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign
Description
The Philosophy Program at UIS offers a Philosophy Minor online to complement the online majors at UIS. The minor concentration requires students to take 16 hours (normally four courses), of which eight hours (normally two courses) must be upper division courses taken at UIS; three courses must be from specifiic areas of philosophy. These areas include:

Ethics. Satisfied by PHI/POS492, Contemporary American Political Philosophy

Critical Thinking (in Philosophy)/Logic. Satisfied by PHI301, Critical Thinking, offered by Royce Jones in the Spring of 2003. [Note: The Critical Thinking course offered by UIS Psychology Department does not count towards the minor].

History of Philosophy.Satisfied by PHI453, Person, Identity, and Dignity

A Philosophy Elective can be taken in any area of philosophy. The program may accept philosophy courses taken at a community college before enrolling at UIS, as well as one class taken at a different institution (online or on-campus). We also encourage our online students to take at least one class on our campuses in Springfield or Peoria, if possible.

Presently, ENG 491, European Symbolism may be petitioned into the minor.

Additionally, students may enroll in a summer class focusing on computer ethics (CSC 491, Computer Ethics) that satisfies the ethics requirements for the minor. It is not listed as a philosophy class in the UIS catalog since it requires some competency in the area of computer science (such as the ability to build a data-base). Students who have taken an introduction to computer science course or have basic engineering skills should be able to successfully complete this course.

Interested students should contact Dr. Keith Miller at (217) 206-6770 to obtain permission to register for the class.
