It broke away from the industrial area and took possession of new fields, namely that of consumer products, the home, road traffic and safety, hospitals and schools as well as sport leisure. However, the primary aim of ergonomics has remained the same --- to optimize the functioning of a system by adapting it to human capacities and needs.
Creation of safe ergonomically correct work environments should concern all businesses seeking to thrive and prosper in today's business climate. Fifty percent of OSHA incidents are ergonomics related. The key points addressed in the U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration Ergonomic Guidelines include management commitment and employee involvement in safety, work site analysis, ergonomic hazards, hazard prevention and control. This includes established procedures to control ergonomic hazards and education and training of managers, supervisors and employees to assist in this effort.
