The Accounting program develops an understanding of accounting principles, business law, communications, business equipment and related areas of study in the field. Instruction is offered in computerized accounting systems. Technical skills in financial accounting, cost accounting and tax preparation are emphasized. The associate's degree is also available completely over the Internet.
Accounting duties typically include maintaining journals and ledgers, processing banking transactions, billing, preparing payroll, maintaining inventory records, purchasing, processing expense reports, preparing financial statements and analyzing managerial reports. Position titles may include junior or staff accountant, junior auditor, cost accounting clerk, bookkeeper, payroll clerk, inventory clerk, accounts receivable clerk and financial management trainee. A two-year program requiring 60 credits leads to an associate of applied science degree. A technical certificates and is also available. |

Accountants help to ensure that companies run more efficiently, public records are kept more accurately, and taxes are paid properly and on time. They perform these vital functions by offering an increasingly wide array of business and accounting services to their clients. Broadly, these services include public, management, and government accounting, as well as internal auditing.
In each of these major fields, however, accountants continue to carry out the fundamental tasks of the occupation which is to prepare, analyze, and verify financial documents in order to provide information to clients. Specific job duties vary in the major fields of accounting. Public accountants perform a broad range of accounting, auditing, tax, and consulting activities for their clients who may be corporations, governments, non-profit organizations, or individuals.
The Associate in Science degree in Accounting offers an introduction to the principles of accounting. Other components include payroll, tax, corporate accounting, computerized accounting, and financial statement analysis. |
