This course is a study of the maritime way of life through humanistic forms of expression, such as novel, diary, memoir, short story, personal narrative, letters from the warfront to the homefront, and personal reflection. It is designed specifically for the intellectual advancement of military enlisted students who are in or seek positions of leadership. Course topics include great maritime stories, American writers? reflections of naval service, personal reflection from America?s major wars, and descriptions of naval life aboard a variety of different vessels. The course?s content is drawn from leading naval humanities texts on the official Commandant of the Coast Guard and Chief Petty Officer of the Navy?s Reading Lists. Course texts include: Shenk, Authors at Sea: Modern American Writers Remember Their Naval Service; McBride, Good Night Officially: The Pacific War Letters of a Destroyer Sailor: The Letters of Yeoman James Orvill Raines; Junger, The Perfect Storm; and Maas, The Terrible Hours. The course is open to any interested student. |
