This course provides an overview of the literature of one of the greatest civilizations in the history of the world. However, Korea?s geographical and cultural isolation from the West until recently has meant that people of the West are usually unfamiliar with its literary tradition. This course is an introductory attempt to overcome that deficit. Through extensive readings of English translations, the student will gain a basic familiarity with Korean literature from its earliest days up through the twentieth century. The works studied represent a broad survey of the literature available, including poetry, short stories, selections from longer works, and non-fiction. |

Latin America is comprised of dozens of countries, and despite several common languages, each country possesses its own set of unique cultural aspects. Latin America is a complex mixture of Native American, European, North American, African and even Asian influences, spanning two continents and several thousand years of collective history. It would be virtually impossible to conduct an in-depth look at all the various cultural aspects of every Latin American country within the confines of this course; as such, IR 361 attempts to focus upon only a few countries, and address some of the key cultural aspects and issues of these select countries. Each week will consist of a set of readings pertaining to a particular country, and will require the student to research further his or her understanding of regional cultures. |
