Program Detail : The course is an ethnographic and ethnohistorical survey of the peoples and cultures of Mesoamerica, focusing on the Maya, Aztec, and their present-day descendants. Texts, narratives, documents, and ethnographic accounts are interpreted in light of critical theory and analysis, using ethnology, ethnohistory, archaeology, and literature. Colonial history, colonialism, representation, indigenous "voices," and strategies of resistance and cultural survival will be examined.
