Program Detail : This course provides an overview of the use of irregular and para-military forces from earliest times through the Middle Ages to the twentieth century. The examples selected range from ancient Persia, Greece and Rome, through the Middle Ages and the Colonial Wars of the Seventeenth and Eighteenth Centuries to the recent guerrilla wars of the Twentieth Century. A series of 23 case studies will stress the impact of geography, economics, and demographics in different regions of the world. The involvement of the US in war in Vietnam stresses the initial advisory role only. The impact of the Reagan Doctrine support for guerrilla forces combating Communist expansion during the Cold War will highlight the war In Afghanistan. The course will finish with a look to the post Cold War future covering potential use of US Forces in "Military Operations Other Than War"-MOOTW.
