Name : Civil War Cavalry: Theory, Practice and Operations

Program Detail : This is a four part course covering the theory, practice and operations of Civil War Cavalry. The first part will cover the development of the mounted arm and address its traditional role as the eyes and ears of the Army. The theory of cavalry tactics taught by West Point to the cadets prior to the civil war will be covered to provide a knowledge base from which they generated ideas and developed tactics as Civil War officers. The second part will address the personalities involved, to include Nathan Bedford Forrest, Jeb Stuart, Wade Hampton, John Buford, George Custer, and others. The third part will address John Singleton Mosby and his use of guerrilla warfare. Finally, the fourth part will address some of the cavalry combat. The course may include an optional field trip to some of the cavalry battlefields for interested students.
