Conflict and Religion (PS588) Religion G American Public University
Details
This course is intended to discuss the possible roles of religion as a catalyst for political and social conflict. Declarations of holy war against the West; bombings of abortion clinics in the name of Christianity; killings of Muslims by fundamentalist Jews; attacks by religious sects. All suggest that violence and conflict may be driven by religious beliefs. Given that most religions preach some form of nonviolence in dealing with the world, the key issue for the course is to examine why and how religious doctrines can be used to justify killing in the name of God.
