This course provides an overview of the use of irregular and para-military forces from earliest times through the Middle Ages to the twentieth century. The examples selected range from ancient Persia, Greece and Rome, through the Middle Ages and the Colonial Wars of the Seventeenth and Eighteenth Centuries to the recent guerrilla wars of the Twentieth Century. A series of 23 case studies will stress the impact of geography, economics, and demographics in different regions of the world.
