The student is provided with sufficient readings to establish a MINIMUM knowledge base from which to begin predictive analysis and research. It is highly recommended that the student either have taken IN520 before this course, or at least be taking it concurrently, in order to become familiar with several predictive analytical methodologies. The course begins with an historical overview of Russia, utilizing selected essays by various Russian experts. It then moves rapidly into the Cold War and post-Cold War period to address key challenges that Russia will be compelled to confront in the 21st Century. While the student will have selected a specific aspect for the intelligence estimate paper, it is expected that the student will learn to view Russia as a complex whole, and not focus on one aspect to the exclusion of all others.
