In the psychology of communication, we are broadly interested in how individuals use messages in their day to day lives. This course will focus on the special set of behaviors that allow individuals to acquire and share information, and on how people use these behaviors to achieve their desired goals. Communication involves a host of mental processes: perception, cognition, motivation, emotion, learning, memory and creativity. How people use messages is influenced by intelligence, gender, motivation and personality. How people respond to messages is influenced by social roles, group affiliation, behavioral setting, cultural background, and one's level of communication skill. This course will explore the intersection of these concepts by looking at how we communicate to ourselves, other individuals, within small groups, within large organizations, via mass communication, and in cross-cultural communications.
Students must have completed lower-division coursework in general psychology prior to enrolling in this course.
