The Institute and Guild of Brewing?s General Certificate in Brewing and Packaging is a new qualification in brewing science, in which passing the program?s culminating examination allows brewers to obtain an IGB qualification without having to pass the rigorous Associate Membership Examination.
The Institute and Guild of Brewing has chosen UC Davis Extension as the world?s only distance learning instructional provider for the General Certificate in Brewing and Packaging Exam Preparation Program. Earning the General Certificate in Brewing and Packaging gives international recognition of an understanding of the principles and practices of brewing and packaging operations.
The General Certificate in Brewing and Packaging Examination tests knowledge of practical brewing sciences, arts and skills, without the intense scientific and engineering focus of the Associate Membership Examination. It is therefore a suitable qualification for those brewers who have much brewing experience and knowledge, but who do not have a formal background in science or engineering. The General Certificate in Brewing and Packaging of the Institute Examination might also be attractive to those non-professional brewers who feel their practical brewing knowledge approaches professional levels and who wish to demonstrate their acumen.
The program focuses on:
- an overview of the brewing and packaging processes
- fundamental biological, biochemical and other principles in beer production
- fundamental principles of beer packaging
- beer quality and its management
contamination
- plant cleaning and maintenance
- water, effluent and utilities |

The hardest part of quality management to understand and apply is the most critical part: the creation, nurturing, and sustaining of an organizational climate based on the principles and practices of quality. Without this requisite, teamwork, employee empowerment, and continuous improvement degenerate into buzzwords that increase employee cynicism and decrease responsiveness to organizational goals.
Companies that have been successful in implementing TQM have instilled a certain set of values and beliefs in their operating cultures. The course details these elements and discusses the benefits to companies that adopt them. Wherever your organization is in its efforts to improve customer satisfaction and competitiveness, this course provides line and staff managers with useful information and techniques they can take back to work and apply. |

According to Hughes et al, oftentimes the only difference between chaos and a smoothly functioning operation is leadership. Recent problems in well-known organizations in the United States (like Enron, Tyco, and Andersen to name a few) point to lapses in leadership in terms of ethical and moral components. As you have chosen to study this topic in this seminar, you probably have an inkling of the power of leadership, or at the very least you have had many experiences with what you would describe as "good" leaders-people who have been able to decipher chaos, set a vision, and get things done in a meaningful way. Perhaps you have also been subjected to "bad" leaders and have committed to not being like them.
The purpose of this course is to dig a little deeper into the topic of leadership in such a way that you'll have the opportunity to explore what leadership is about. This exploration will rely on your experience (both personal and professional) with leaders, a heavy dose of readings, and application through a series of papers and analyses. At the end of the course, and through rigorous study, you should understand more about what you believe constitutes good leadership. This course is focused on enhancing your understanding and application of leadership in both your personal and professional roles.
A high level of energy is expected from students taking this course. There is a good deal of reading to do and discussions to participate in. In learning about leadership, the combination of these two methods, coupled with your own reflection, are key to mastering the subject. |
