UIC`s Health Informatics Certificate Program makes it possible for the motivated mature health care professional, who already has a master`s degree, to seek advanced understanding of the application and management of computers within the health care setting.

The program introduces flexibility to quality teaching and instruction. Online instruction optimizes the "anytime anyplace" learning, demanded by the program`s student population of physicians, nurses, pharmacists, clinical laboratory scientists, and other allied health professionals, as well as those working in public health, health information management, and business.

The Health Informatics Certificate indicates that graduates are conversant in the creation, implementation, operation, and control of health information systems. Course work emphasizes development of a solid skill set and knowledge base grounded in health care information sciences.

Simply put, UIUC's nationally recognized GSLIS faculty combine very brief periods of on-campus instruction with Internet instruction and independent learning. Live Web-based instruction allows LEEP students to hear faculty, see slides and other graphics, and chat with the professor and each other. Students from as far away as Japan, Argentina, Mexico, France, Alaska, and Hawaii study together and develop a true learning community.

All our master's students learn theories and practices of library and information science (LIS) through the study of the foundations, principles and ideas of the discipline and the status and expectations of the profession. The Bachelor of Arts degree in Liberal Studies at the University of Illinois at Springfield is built on 25 years of experience in assisting students to design individualized degree programs. The Liberal Studies Online program enables students to complete coursework using the latest networked information technology for increased access to educational resources and materials, and offers individualized instruction, advising, and support. Students develop customized educational programs that include 10 semester hours of Liberal Studies core courses, 12 semester hours of university requirements, and 38 semester hours of electives structured around their academic interests. Faculty advisors provide students with program orientation and ongoing academic advising, and answer questions about program policies and procedures. During the introductory course, LIS 301: Self-Directed Learning, students prepare degree program proposals that assess their current learning needs and long-range academic and professional/personal goals, and integrate them with appropriate learning methods, such as Internet-based courses, telecourses, campus-based classroom courses, and credit for prior learning assessment. Although the degree proposal must be broad enough to meet the interdisciplinary goals of the Liberal Studies Online program, students may integrate a thematic focus into their curricula. For example, learners may choose such emphases as international studies, women's studies, African-American studies, human resource development, or labor studies.

Description
The Internet Masters of Computer Science (IMCS) program is an Internet-delivered version of the on-campus Masters of Computer Science (MCS) degree. The MCS degree is a professional degree requiring nine units of course work and no thesis. The coursework for the degree is accomplished by taking courses online over a period of sufficient time to acquire the nine units. Courses are offered each semester (including a summer semester). One can participate in the MCS program as either a full-time or a part-time student. Full-time students typically enroll in three units of coursework per semester. If you are employed full time, you can participate as a part-time student and enroll in one or more courses per semester.

The MEng is a professional degree based entirely on course work, without a research component. The program is administered directly by the UIC College of Engineering. This program has been approved by the Illinois Board of Higher Education.

In Illinois, in the United States, and in the rest of the world there exists a vast population of adults who already have a university education at the bachelor level and who would like to expand and update their knowledge by taking additional course work at the graduate level resulting, in many cases, in a master`s degree. Up to now, many of these potential students have been unable to realize their educational dreams because they reside in a geographical area remote from a research university campus, or because of work or family obligations that do not allow them to pursue their educational goals in a synchronous classroom environment, or because of disability.

The Master of Health Professions Education (MHPE) program recruits health professionals in educational leadership positions, or those who are interested in moving into such positions and who seek formal training in education and management.

The cross-section of health professionals in the MHPE program (physicians, nurses, dentists, pharmacists, allied health professionals) provides a broad base of experiences in educational issues and interprofessional cooperation. The program is meant for health professionals serving in or preparing for roles such as:

Academic: department chairs, education deans, curriculum coordinators, residency or clinical training directors

Health Care: education directors, program planners and evaluators, directors of health maintenance organizations with a focus on education

Professional Societies and Research Associations: training directors, executive directors, liaisons for accreditation, continuing education planners International Health Agencies: officials responsible for training, education program directors

Upon completion of the MHPE degree, the student will have knowledge and skills in educational planning and evaluation, instructional design and assessment, and in leadership and management of educational programs involving health care systems.

The UIC MHPE is unique in that it offers two non-traditional formats that allow professionals to pursue their degrees while keeping their jobs. The on-campus option offers courses in an intensive one or two week format while the on-line option enables students to complete the degree coursework by participating in classes through a computer connection at their home or office.

NetMath is a coalition uniting the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, Ohio State University, University of Pittsburgh, University of Iowa, and Harvard, dedicated to the delivery of web-based globally accessible interactive educational services that teach the mathematical sciences through mentoring and technology. NetMath brings students and university professors together to form a human electronic community devoted to learning mathematics. What was previously taught only to select high school students through C&M NetMath, now is available to students across the country without their ever needing to set foot in a university classroom. High School students, university students, homeschool students and adult learners now have the benefit of this program for credit at the University of Illinois. These students use professional tools (computers running Mathematica) to learn calculus, and mathematical problem solving skills that they may further incorporate into their overall education.

The students learn mathematics primarily from Calculus&Mathematica electronic lessons which are divided into three sections: Basics, Tutorials, and Give It a Try. For each homework, the student is responsible for reading the Basics and Tutorials sections, and completing the assigned problems.

Philosophy Minor Philosophy C University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign

The Philosophy Program at UIS offers a Philosophy Minor online to complement the online majors at UIS. The minor concentration requires students to take 16 hours (normally four courses), of which eight hours (normally two courses) must be upper division courses taken at UIS; three courses must be from specifiic areas of philosophy. These areas include:

Ethics. Satisfied by PHI/POS492, Contemporary American Political Philosophy

Critical Thinking (in Philosophy)/Logic. Satisfied by PHI301, Critical Thinking, offered by Royce Jones in the Spring of 2003. [Note: The Critical Thinking course offered by UIS Psychology Department does not count towards the minor].

History of Philosophy.Satisfied by PHI453, Person, Identity, and Dignity

A Philosophy Elective can be taken in any area of philosophy. The program may accept philosophy courses taken at a community college before enrolling at UIS, as well as one class taken at a different institution (online or on-campus). We also encourage our online students to take at least one class on our campuses in Springfield or Peoria, if possible.

Presently, ENG 491, European Symbolism may be petitioned into the minor.

Additionally, students may enroll in a summer class focusing on computer ethics (CSC 491, Computer Ethics) that satisfies the ethics requirements for the minor. It is not listed as a philosophy class in the UIS catalog since it requires some competency in the area of computer science (such as the ability to build a data-base). Students who have taken an introduction to computer science course or have basic engineering skills should be able to successfully complete this course.

Professional Development Sequence In Dairy Science General Studies C University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign
Description
The professional development sequence in dairy science includes a series of structured courses delivered by the Internet using an interactive course delivery system. A certificate will be awarded to students who successfully complete the introductory class (Phase 1), a minimum of two of the advanced classes (Phase 2), and a minimum of two of the lab techniques (Phase 3). The certificate will be valuable to adult students needing advanced training including veterinarians, livestock nutritionists, extension educators, livestock producers, and herd managers. Undergraduate and graduate students at the University of Illinois, Southern Illinois University, and other two year and four year colleges may also take specific classes to round out and "customize" their college degrees.
