Agnes Scott College is a liberal arts women's college. As of 2003, the college enrolls around 950 students. Agnes Scott is affiliated with the Presbyterian Church. The campus is located in Decatur, Georgia, just outside of Atlanta.
The college was founded as Decatur Female Seminary in 1889. In 1890 the name was changed to Agnes Scott Institute to honor the mother of the college's primary benefactor, Col. George Washington Scott. The name was changed again to Agnes Scott College in 1906.
Students at Agnes Scott are known as "Scotties". Distinguished alumnae include the first woman to be ordained a minister in the Presbyterian Church (USA), a Chief Justice of the South Carolina Supreme Court, and US Representative Katherine Harris. |
