The university is a branch of the Universit? du Qu?bec, a public institution with branches in many Quebec cities. It was created on 9 April 1969 by the government of Quebec, through the merger of the ?cole de Beaux-Arts de Montr?al, the Coll?ge Sainte-Marie, and a number of smaller schools.
As of 2003, UQAM has a student population of 39,537 in six faculties (arts, education, letters, political science and law, science, and social science) and one school (management). It offers bachelor's, master's, and doctoral degrees. It is one of Montreal's two French language universities, along with the University of Montreal.
Its campus is located in downtown Montreal, with most of its buildings around Berri-UQAM metro station, in the Quartier Latin neighborhood. The university also leases buildings or classrooms in several towns outside Montreal, offering programs or parts of programs to local students. |
