The Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology (now officially known only as RMIT University), is a university in Melbourne, Australia. Its main campus is located in the city's central business district.
Founded by Francis Ormond in 1887 as the Working Men?s College, and renamed Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology in 1960, RMIT was given formal university status in 1992. By the end of its inaugural year, 900 students were enrolled; in 2002 this number was 57,243.
As well as several Victorian campuses, RMIT has an international campus in Vietnam.
In 2004, following a number of failed attempts, RMIT is preparing to restructure its administration for the third time in ten years, antagonizing staff and jeopardizing its research reputation in the process. |
