Concordia Seminary is located in Saint Louis, Missouri and trains clergy for the Lutheran Church - Missouri Synod. Concordia Seminary is the oldest seminary of the LCMS but not its first seminary. That distinction goes to Concordia Theological Seminary in Ft. Wayne, IN. Concordia Seminary is also the largest Lutheran Seminary in the United States.
Concordia Seminary became a focus of national media attention in 1974 when 50 of its 55 faculty members together with the vast majority of students left to form Seminex or Concordia Seminary in Exile. The faculty members left the seminary in protest of the suspension of the seminary president, John Tietjen. John Tietjen had been accused of allowing the teaching of false doctrine at the seminary. Specifically he had allowed and fostered the teaching of the Historical-Critical Method of Bible interpretation which led to the denial by several faculty members of the historicity of many biblical accounts of miracles and the divine nature of much of Holy Scripture.
Concordia Seminary has since returned to its former status as the largest Lutheran Seminary in America. |
