Florida to fund private virtual schools - posted on Apr. 17, 2004
|
There are a lot of debates going on about online education, but online education is moving forward; the Palm Beach Post reports that the state of Florida is funding private virtual schools in the state. Sen. Debbie Wasserman Schultz from Florida had been opposing funding for private schools up in the past, but she is taking a different approach on online education. In fact, she is the one who strongly pushed the move to fund private virtual schools in this case. The report does not describe in specific, but the primary motive of the move seems to come from the belief that online education is here to stay and that it will benefit the education in general(quality of education, cost, and so on).

University of Liverpool to become Europe's biggest online education provider - posted on Apr. 16, 2004
University of Liverpool has just become Europe's biggest online education provider as it acquired its e-learning partner by global higher education specialist Sylvan Learning Systems. As far as the size is concerned, the university does not enroll that many students; it currently enrolls 1,800 students in its degree programs. Leading online education providers in North American such as University of Phoenix and Devry University enroll a lot more students than University of Liverpool. However, this is still a notable event, and considering the size of the market(EU) and the fact that University of Liverpool has become the leader in the market, the university might become a major player in the global online education market in the coming years. We will see how the acquisition will turn out.

Indiana University of Pennsylvania - posted on Apr. 11, 2004
Indiana University of Pennsylvania sociology professor Dr. Robert Heasley teaches a graduate class Wednesday evenings in both Harrisburg and Indiana; he does that by using video-conferencing technology which is a technology used in many online classrooms; this article reports how he is teaching the class and briefly discusses its pros and cons. Apparently, not everything goes smoothly in this type of setup and one students says, "It's good for a conference, but for a class it's really difficult." Probably he is not the only student who feels that way and it is probably an honest response. Although technology is improving every day, every hour, every minute, there is still a great technological challenge in online education, and the development of technologies such as video-conferencing technology can have significant impact on the development and adaptation of online education.

Connecting classrooms around the world - posted on Apr. 10, 2004
Online education technology can be used to bring the education institution to the internet, but it can also be used to connect various education institutions real time; though the latter application is used experimentally for the most part, more and more educators around the world are experimenting the application, from K-12 to the higher education. High school students in Birmingham, UK and students in South Africa did some experiment and they held a geography class; Evening Mail(icBirmingham) reports how this experiment went; students were able to get better sense of what is taught in the classroom reportedly. Online education is an evolving technology and many new applications such as this are being invented.

Xerox signing up with University Alliance - posted on Apr. 9, 2004
We reported that number of corporations are outsourcing their training programs to online education providers; Xerox is also following the trend and signing up with University Alliance to provide training programs to its employees. Though Xerox is not directly involved in the production of computer software or hardware, the company is a very much technology company. Yet they decided to outsource its online training program; it is probably because even technology companies would benefit greatly from outsourcing a part of their technology based operation of business. This shows that online education providers have even greater market to target.

Taking life time experience into consideration? - posted on Apr. 3, 2004
Some degree programs offered online today take life time experience into consideration as they award a higher education diploma. It is not a very favorable idea expectedly, and this article mentions about one of incidents occurred with regard to one of life time experience diplomas; the president of Gwinnett College of Business apparently received a degree that takes life time experience into consideration, and because of that process, the validity of the degree is in question. The idea of giving a diploma based on life time experience itself may have good intension, but it can create many problems depending on how it is executed. As many corporations work with online education institutions today and integrate their training programs and institutions' degree programs, it would be very systematic and rewarding if employees can get a higher education diploma while they work full-time. Perhaps, life time experience should be taken into consideration as training and education are integrated into work environment in the process of awarding a higher education diploma.

Online education being integrated into traditional on-campus programs - posted on Apr. 2, 2004
As we reported a couple of times in the past, some universities are integrating online education management system with traditional one. Sheffield University is one of universities that aggressively adapt online education into its traditional teaching system, and apparently, some students only enroll in courses that enable WebCT, the online education software application they use to teach courses online. The university wonders if students select WebCT just because they do not have to get up in the morning, but they are certain that students enjoy WebCT.

Those of you who are interested in studying online probably have heard about University of Phoenix. You might have already requested information about the university. There are a lot of debates going on about online education lately and many debates are often held on University of Phoenix in particular. This article published on SunHerald.com discusses University of Phoenix and gives good overview of the university. Because of its size and stream lined teaching process, the university is often referred to as "McUniversity" and "Drive Thru-U." On the other hand, many praise the university for having finally created a system to deliver the higher education to the mass while there is almost no limitation with regard to the time or the location. They have been running very successful operation despite criticism, and the popularity(the number of enrollment) is growing rapidly, but they are also dealing with number of problems including legal problems(ouch). If you are interested in taking a course from the university, this is a recommended reading.
